Several species of the genus pogon are kept as pets, especially the central bearded dragon. They are also be exhibited in zoos due to easy care in comparison to other exotic reptiles and their hardy nature.

They live in the arid and subtropical woodlands, savannas, scrublands, into the great interior deserts and around the shore areas. Their range extends throughout the interior of the eastern states and to the eastern half of South Australia and southeastern Northern Territory.
