Christmas, originally a Christian festival which celebrates the birth of Jesus, has transformed into an increasingly secular family holiday which is observed by both Christians and non-Christians alike. Today, it includes an elaborate exchange of gifts, decoration of the Christmas tree, lighting up candles and ones home instead of exceedingly Christian elements. The mythical figure of Santa Claus has played an important role in this festival. The name Christmas highlights the Mass of Christ, wherein the Christians remember the sacrifice that Jesus had given for humankind and his subsequent Resurrection. It commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Christmas traditions across the world differ but remain the same in spirit- with each celebration embodying the key traits of light, evergreens and hope. Finland has traditions of visiting a sauna on Christmas Day, listening to the national radio broadcast of ‘Peace of Christmas’ and visiting the gravesites of family members. Norway becomes the birthplace of the Yule Log, a practice of the ancient Norse who celebrated the return of the sun at the winter solstice and becomes responsible of log-shaped cheese, cakes and desserts during the holidays. Germany becomes the origin of the practice of decorating the Christmas fir trees, where decorating evergreen trees has always been part of the German winter solstice tradition.
Christmas thus has always been a festival which has celebrated the rebirth of the Sun, of warmth, of life. It has been a festival of hope and love and lights, but above all, family.
