A flashlight (us) or torch (united kingdom) is a portable handheld electric light. The source of the mild regularly used to be an incandescent light bulb (lamp) but has been regularly changed by mild-emitting diodes (leds) since the mid-2000s. An ordinary flashlight includes the mild source installed in a reflector, a transparent cowl (from time to time combined with a lens) to protect the mild supply and reflector, a battery, and a switch. Those are supported and protected by using a case. The discovery of the dry cell and miniature incandescent electric powered lamps made the first battery-powered flashlights viable around 1899. Nowadays, flashlights use on the whole light-emitting diodes and run on disposable or rechargeable batteries. A few are powered by using the consumer turning a crank, shaking the lamp, or squeezing it. A few have sun panels to recharge the battery. Further to the general-purpose handheld flashlight, many forms had been adapted for special uses. Head or helmet-installed flashlights designed for miners and campers leave the arms free.
A few flashlights may be used underwater or in flammable atmospheres. Flashlights are used as a mild supply while in an area without electrical retailers, all through power outages or whilst light is wanted in an area wherein a stressed out lamp is difficult to apply, for example, at the back of or underneath heavy furniture or whilst servicing appliances.
