Almonds are among the most popular tree nuts in the world. They are known for their high nutrition content. They are rich in vitamins and minerals, healthy fats and contain antioxidants as well. Almonds are the edible seeds of Prunus dulcis which is called the almond tree in common language. Albeit, they are native to the Middle East, however, their largest producer in the world is the US. The almonds we buy from stores have the shell removed already and so we just see the edible nut which is otherwise inside. They are sold raw as well as in roasted and salted form. Many almond derived products are also available in the market such as the almond milk, oil, butter, flour or paste which is also known as marzipan. Almonds boast an impressive content of nutrients present. An ounce, or roughly, 28 gram serving of almonds contains 3.5 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, 14 grams (9 of which are monounsaturated), 37% vitamin E (of the RDI), 32% Manganese (of the RDI), 20% Magnesium (of the RDI). They also contain an affable amount of copper, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and phosphorus. This is what comes from a small handful which supplies 2.5 grams of digestible carbohydrates and only 161 calories. It is important to note that our human body does not absorb about 10 - 15% of their calories because some of the fat is inaccessible to digestive enzymes. Almonds also have high amounts of phytic acid, a substance that binds and prevents certain minerals from being absorbed.
