A mushroom, also called a toadstool is a spore bearing, fleshy, fruiting body of a fungus. It typically grows above ground, on its food source, or on soil. The name of the cultivated white mushrooms is used as the standard name for mushrooms, which is, according to the scientific nomenclature, Agaricus bisporus. Hence the word mushroom is commonly associated with those fungi like Basidiomycota and Agaricomycetes that have a stem ( also known as stipe), a cap (also known as pileus) and gills (also known as lamellae) on the underside of the cap. The term Mushroom is also used to describe the fleshy fruiting bodies of some Ascomycota and hence mushroom is a universal term to variety of other gilled fungi. The microscopic spores are produced by these gills which in turn help the fungus spread across the ground or its occupant surface.
Sometimes gilled mushrooms also known by the names of Agarics in reference to their order Agaricales or their similarity to Agaricus, this is when you deviate from standard morphology. In such cases one can also observe the usage of more scientific names such as puffball, bolete, morel and stinkhorn. In general sometimes, mushroom can also be used to refer to the term as either an entire fungus when in culture or the thallus of species forming the fruiting body called mushrooms or the species itself.
