Cross tattoos are tattoos of cross designs, which said to carry symbolic as well as religious meaning. As cross is a religious symbol for christians. It marks the event of the crucification of Jesus Christ and the redeeming benefits of his passion and devotion. Hence the cross denotes a symbol of Christ himself and faith of christians. This symbol of religion and faith has become one of the most common tattoo designs of the age.
Tattoos are a form of body art where the design is made by inserting ink, pigments and dyes into the dermis layer of the skin to change its pigment colour. The word tattoo originates from the Samoan word tatau, which means “to strike”. Its origin and usage goes back to the 18th century. There exists three broad categories of tattoos, namely; purely decorative (which carry no meaning), symbolic ( carrying a specific meaning to the bearer), pictorial ( displaying the image of someone or something). A cross tattoo can fall in either of the categories of a symbolic tattoo or a pictorial one as the cross tattoo symbolises the religious beliefs and faith of the person contrasting with the pictorial effect of representing the crucification of Jesus Christ.
