A beautiful or decorative wreath of leaves, flowers or other material is known as a garland. Garlands can be hung or worn around the neck or head, hung on any non living object, or laid in a place of religious or cultural importance. The origin of the word garland comes from the French word guirlande, which itself originates from the Italian word ghirlanda which means a braid. One can classify garlands in certain types, some of them being, cranberry or popcorn garland, bead garland, rope garland, flower garland, pine garland, Lei - the traditional garland from Hawaii, tinsel garland, pennant garland, vine garland, mundamala- a garland made of several skulls or heads, found in Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu iconography and daisy chain garlands. One can find the traces of garlands in literature and in poetry. Before the adventures of Alice began in Alice's Adventures Wonderlands, written by Lewis Carroll, she was sitting with her sister contemplating to make a daisy chain garland or not, before she got interrupted by the White Rabbit. In poetry, there is a mention of garlands in the Bible, La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats, the Golden Road by Lucy M. Montgomery and The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit.
