Turtles are reptiles of the order testudines. They're characterized by using a special bony or cartilaginous shell advanced from their ribs that acts as a shield. "turtle" might also talk to the order as a whole (american english) or to fresh-water and sea-residing testudines (british english). Testudines includes each extant (residing) and extinct species. Its earliest recognised members date from the center jurassic. Turtles are one of the oldest reptile organizations, greater ancient than snakes or crocodilians. Of the 356 recognized extant species, some are extraordinarily endangered.
Turtles are ectotherms—normally known as bloodless-blooded—meaning that their internal temperature varies in step with the ambient environment. But, because of their excessive metabolic price, leatherback sea turtles have a frame temperature this is incredibly better than that of the surrounding water. Turtles are categorized as amniotes, at the side of other reptiles, birds, and mammals. Like other amniotes, turtles breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, despite the fact that many species stay in or around water. A set of turtles is known as a bale.
