Zebras are several species of African equids, that is, belonging to the horse family, united by their distinctive white and black striped coats. Each Zebra has a set or pattern of stripes that is unique to every individual, just as the fingerprint in case of humans. They are generally social animals that live in large herds to small harems. Zebras have never been truly domesticated, unlike horses and donkeys which are their closest relatives. There exist three species amongst zebras: the mountain zebra, the plains zebra and the Grevy's zebra.Grevy's zebra is the sole species of subgenus Dolichohippus while the plains zebra and the mountain zebra belong to the subgenus Hippotigris. The former resembles a donkey, to which zebras are closely related, while the latter two look more like a horse. All three of them belong to the genus Equus, along with other living equids. The unique patterns of black and white stripes of zebras make them one of the animals most familiar to people. They occur in a variety of habitats, such as woodlands, grasslands, savannas, mountains, thorny scrublands and coastal hills. Various anthropogenic factors have caused a severe impact on populations of zebra, in particular hunting for skins and habitat destruction. the mountain zebra and Grevy's zebra are endangered.
