Camels are mammals with long legs and big hump. The scientific name of camel is camelus. They are commonly found in deserts. Their average life expectancy is 40-50 years. Their body is made such that they can withstand extreme climatic conditions in which other mammals might die. Their thick skin or coat protects them from the intense heat radiated in the deserts. They have long been domesticated. As a livestock, they provide food (milk and meat) and textiles (fiber and felt from hair). They usually don't find adequate water in deserts. Hence, they store water in their hump to consume later. Their mouths have a thick lining which allows them to chew thorny desert plants as well. They have very efficient kidneys and intestines which reabsorb water and keep them cool.
Camel safaris in desert are very popular in which tourists sit at the back of camel to take a ride. They are also used as a means of transportation for passengers and cargo. In today's world, there are 3 surviving species of camel. The humped dromedary constitutes 94% of the world's camel population and the two humped Bactrian camel makes up the remaining. The Wild Bactrian camel, the third species is now critically endangered.
