Paris is the capital of the France and also the most populous city of France, with a population of 2,140,526 residents as of an official estimate made on January 1, 2019 in an area of 105 square kilometers. Paris has been one of Europe's major centres of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, science and the arts, since the 17th century. The Paris Region had a GDP of €709 billion, which is equal to $808 billion, in 2017. Paris was the second most expensive city in the world, after Singapore, and ahead of Zurich, Hong Kong, Oslo and Geneva, as per the Economist Intelligence Unit Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, in 2018. Another source ranked Paris as most expensive city being on a par with Singapore and Hong Kong in the same year - 2018. The name "Paris" is derived from the Celtic Parisii tribe who were its early inhabitants. The name of the city is not related to the Paris of Greek mythology. Paris is often referred to as the 'City of Light' or in their native language, La Ville Lumiere, mainly due to its leading role during the Age of Enlightenment and also in a more literal aspect, because Paris was one of the first large European cities in the world to use gas street lighting on a grand scale on its boulevards and monuments.
