A train is a form of rail transport that consists of a series of connected vehicles which generally run along a railroad track to transport cargo or passengers. The word "train" comes from the Old French word trahiner which is further derived from the Latin word trahere which means "to pull" or "to draw". The power for a train to run is provided by a separate locomotive or individual motors in a self-propelled multiple unit. Albeit, historically steam propulsion dominated, however, the most common types of locomotive are diesel and electric in which the latter is supplied by overhead wires or additional rails. Trains can also be run downhill using gravity, hauled by horses, pulled by engine or water-driven cable or wire winch or powered by pneumatics, batteries or gas turbines. The track generally consists of two running rails with a fixed spacing which may be augmented by additional rails such as electric conducting rails and rack rails. Maglev and monorails guide ways are also occasionally used. A passenger train consists of passenger-carrying vehicles and can often be very long and run at high speeds. High-speed rail service began to expand rapidly in the late 20th century and is still a major subject of further development.
