A grenade is a weapon, typically an explosive weapon, generally thrown by hand, but it can also refer to projectiles which are shot out of grenade launchers. Usually a grenade consists of an explosive charge, a firing pin inside the grenade to trigger the detonating mechanism and a detonating mechanism. Once the soldier has thrown the grenade, the safety level is released, then the striker throws the safety level away from the grenade body as it starts rotating in order to detonate the primer. The job of the primer is to explode and ignite the fuze, which is also sometimes called the delay element. Thereafter the fuse burns down to the detonator, which is hence responsible for the explosion of the main charge.
There exists several types of grenades, some of them include, fragmentation (frag), smoke grenades and high explosive concussions. The most commonly found in the modern armies are fragmentation grenades. Fragmentation grenades are missiles designed to disperse shrapnel on detonation. The body of these grenades is generally made of steel or some hard synthetic material, which is responsible for providing less fragmentation through splintering and sharding, even though in the modern day grenades an inbuilt fragmentation matrix is used.
