Christmas lights as the name suggests are used during the time of Christmas. These are nothing but the so called fairy lights, used for decorations throughout the Christmas season. The custom of using Christmas lights has replaced the original tradition of decorating the christmas trees with candles. The candles symbolize Christ being the light of the world. It is said that the custom is borrowed from the pagan rituals of yule that celebrate the return of light of the sun as the days grow longer after the solstice. And the evergreen trees(now Christmas trees) used to symbolise the renewal and continuance of life in dark times.
This old tradition of candles which was started by the Germans around the 16th century was replaced by the modern day fairy lights, also called Christmas lights around the 20th century. The custom also started to spread detaching itself from the Christmas tree to even doors and building. Around Christmas time, the mid-20th century it became customary to use the Christmas lights as decorations, hence these be seen even across the streets, on buildings and doorways marking the beginning of the Christmas season. The lights and other decorations are usually set up on or around the first day of Advent and are taken down after Christmas on the Twelfth Night and Candlemas. It is considered to be inauspicious leaving the lights and decorations after Candlemas.
